A family in Vunivau, Labasa, faced a heartbreaking loss last Friday night when a fire destroyed their home, valued at approximately $200,000 and built over 45 years. Prasheel Naicker, 27, shared that his father, grandmother, and uncle were inside at the time, along with relatives who had gathered for an evening event. The fire reportedly started in the family’s prayer room and quickly spread, with passersby first alerting the family to the emergency.

Despite Mr. Naicker’s attempts to notify the National Fire Authority (NFA) and personally visit the local fire station to prompt a rapid response, the firefighting team arrived too late to save the house or any belongings. “We couldn’t save anything from the house,” Naicker expressed, clearly devastated by the loss they experienced.

This incident marks the second significant house fire in the Northern Division in just two weeks, the first occurring on New Year’s Day in Waiqele, also in Labasa. That fire resulted in damages estimated at around $250,000, as the homeowners were overseas during the incident. Local authorities have identified concerns regarding fire safety in rural regions, particularly the challenges faced by emergency responders, such as insufficient water sources and fire hydrants.

Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, the acting Divisional Police Commander North, confirmed that investigations into both incidents are ongoing. These tragic events are prompting a community discussion about the urgent need for enhanced fire safety protocols and community awareness.

As the Naicker family temporarily resides with relatives, there is a collective hope that these distressing incidents will lead to meaningful changes in fire safety measures, fostering a more vigilant community. The resilience shown by those affected, alongside support from local authorities and community members, offers a silver lining amid their struggles. Such an outpouring of community spirit could push for much-needed improvements, ensuring families feel safer in their homes in the future.
