A family in Vunivau, Labasa, has suffered a significant loss after their home, valued at approximately $200,000 and built over 45 years, was destroyed by fire last Friday night. Prasheel Naicker, 27, shared that his father, grandmother, and uncle were at home during the fire, which originated from their prayer room.
Two passersby noticed flames and immediately alerted the family, prompting Mr. Naicker to call the National Fire Authority (NFA) and rush to the local fire station to ensure a quicker response. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, the fire spread rapidly and left the family with nothing to salvage. Currently, they are staying with relatives as they cope with this devastating loss.
The incident is particularly concerning as it marks the second house fire in the Northern Division within just two weeks. The earlier incident occurred on New Year’s Day in Waiqele, Labasa, where Shalenee Devi and Nileshwar Prasad lost their home while away in New Zealand. It was suspected that their fire was potentially caused by arson due to prior threats against them.
Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, expressed the urgency of the investigations into both incidents, while the NFA is assessing the effectiveness of their response amidst challenges such as inadequate water sources and fire hydrants in rural areas.
These alarming events underscore the critical need for enhanced fire safety strategies and community preparedness. In light of this situation, it is essential for residents, especially in rural regions, to remain vigilant and proactive about fire safety. The resilience of affected families and support from the community can foster hope for future improvements in fire response services and safety measures.
