A family of seven is in need of support after their home was destroyed by fire last Friday at Belego Settlement in Savusavu. The homeowner, Naren Chand, 59, was away managing his business in Dreketi when he received the tragic news around 7:30 PM.
At the time of the fire, his daughters, son-in-law, and grandchildren were home. Mr. Chand mentioned that although the exact cause of the fire is unknown, his children suspect it stemmed from an electrical wiring issue in the ceiling, which sparked and spread through the walls.
He highlighted that his daughter had recently built a flat nearby for her family. It took Mr. Chand over 20 years to construct the house, storeroom, and car park. “My wife and I worked very hard to purchase everything for the home. We started from scratch,” he remarked.
The family is seeking assistance to rebuild their home, as they have lost everything, including educational resources for Mr. Chand’s grandchildren, who attend Savusavu Secondary School and Khemendra Central School. He has estimated the damages to amount to around $400,000.
Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that an investigation has been launched, and there were no casualties reported. This incident marks the second house fire in the Northern Division this month, following a previous incident in Qelewaqa, Labasa, on September 14.
