A family of 12 has been rendered homeless after their two houses were demolished by landowners in Kalabu. A video circulating on social media captured the incident, showing men dismantling the wooden structures while two police officers were present to manage the unrest.
Ilisapeci Mate, 51, who has lived in the property for over 50 years, explained that the eviction was a result of two dried marijuana branches discovered in their home last month. She stated, “After that, the landowners sent us a notice saying we had to dismantle our house because of the drugs found.” Initially instructed to remove one of the houses, the landowners later demanded that both structures be taken down. Last Friday, the demolition occurred.
Now without a stable home, Ms. Mate and her family are temporarily staying with relatives. “I’m uncertain of what to do now because we’ve stayed here for years. I’m pleading with the relevant authorities to please see my situation and assist me and my family,” she expressed.
The Fiji Police Force confirmed their presence at the eviction scene, stating their role was to “ensure peace was maintained.” Further inquiries regarding the legality of the eviction and the drug-related claims have been directed to the police, and they have yet to comment on these aspects.
This incident sheds light on broader issues surrounding property rights and the legal complexities involved in housing disputes. Similar cases have emerged recently, highlighting the challenges faced by families when confronted with land ownership issues. For instance, in Lautoka, Sofia Farzana reported a forced eviction where she faced accusations from her landlord over land sales and unjust demands for payment to repurchase her family’s home.
As these situations unfold, there is hope that the authorities will take steps to address inequities in property rights and housing security. Ensuring fairness in these disputes can provide necessary stability for families like those of Ms. Mate and Ms. Farzana, who are navigating the difficult terrain of potential homelessness due to legal and social challenges.
