A family in Vunivau, Labasa, endured a devastating loss when their home, valued at $200,000 and constructed over 45 years, was consumed by fire last Friday night. Prasheel Naicker, 27, reported that his father, grandmother, and uncle were present during the incident, which erupted while he was out visiting relatives in Labasa Town.

The fire, which started in the family’s prayer room, rapidly spread, prompting two passersby to alert the family about the flames. Naicker expressed his frustration regarding the delayed response from the National Fire Authority (NFA), suggesting that a quicker arrival might have allowed for the salvage of some belongings. Despite making several phone calls and visiting the local fire station to request urgent assistance, their efforts were in vain, as the damage had already escalated by the time help arrived.

This incident marks the second significant house fire in the Northern Division within a two-week period. The previous fire happened on New Year’s Day in Waiqele, where another family’s home was entirely lost while they were abroad. Investigations into both fires are being led by Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, who indicated ongoing concerns regarding fire safety in rural regions, where resources for firefighting are often inadequate.

Local authorities are responding to heightened discussions about fire safety measures and community preparedness in light of these recent tragedies. While the losses faced by affected families are profound, there is hope that these incidents will catalyze improvements in emergency response protocols and fire safety infrastructure.

As the Naicker family temporarily relocates to stay with relatives, the resilience shown amidst adversity and the support from their community may drive collective action for safer living environments. This commitment to change highlights the importance of community solidarity, aiming to prevent similar incidents in the future and fostering a culture of vigilance regarding fire safety.
