Family Loses Everything in Devastating Fire: How Will They Rebuild?

A family in Koroqaqa, located along Baulevu Road near Nausori Town, has lost their home due to a fire that broke out early Wednesday morning. According to the National Fire Authority (NFA), the fire originated from the storage area of the house. The homeowner attempted to extinguish the flames with a garden hose, but quickly had to flee as the fire intensified.

The NFA estimates that the damage to the four-bedroom residence is between $80,000 and $90,000. Fire crews from the Nausori and Nakasi stations responded to the emergency around 6 a.m. at the home of a 31-year-old taxi driver, who was present with his wife, two children, and mother at the time of the incident.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane expressed concern over the increasing number of residential fires, stating that investigations are underway. He mentioned that the NFA is enhancing its Integrated Community Fire Wardens and Emergency Response Framework. This initiative is a training program conducted at no cost for communities, focusing on firefighting techniques, preventing unwanted fires, administering basic first aid, and responding to various emergencies.
