Family Left Homeless as Fire Devastates Home in Nausori

A family in Koroqaqa, situated along Baulevu Road near Nausori Town, has lost their home following a fire that broke out on Wednesday morning. The National Fire Authority (NFA) reported that the blaze ignited in the storage area of the house. The homeowner attempted to extinguish the flames using a garden hose but ultimately had to flee as the fire spread rapidly.

The NFA assessed the damage to the four-bedroom residence and estimated the cost to be between $80,000 and $90,000. Fire crews from the Nausori and Nakasi fire stations responded to the incident around 6 a.m. At the time of the fire, a 31-year-old taxi driver was at home with his wife, two children, and mother.

NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane expressed concern over the increasing number of residential fires and announced that the organization is enhancing its Integrated Community Fire Wardens and Emergency Response Framework. This initiative includes a training program designed to equip communities with firefighting skills, basic first aid, and emergency response strategies. The training will be provided free of charge and will last for two weeks.

Investigations into the fire are currently underway.
