Family Left Homeless After Devastating Morning Fire

A family in Koroqaqa, located along Baulevu Road outside Nausori Town, has lost their home due to a fire that occurred on Wednesday morning. The National Fire Authority reported that the fire originated in a storage area. The homeowner attempted to extinguish the flames using a garden hose, but the fire spread quickly, forcing the family to flee.

The fire caused an estimated $80,000 to $90,000 in damage to the four-bedroom house. Fire crews from the Nausori and Nakasi fire stations responded to the scene around 6 AM. The owner, a 31-year-old taxi driver, was at home with his wife, two children, and mother at the time of the incident.

Investigations are currently underway, and NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane voiced concerns about the increasing number of house fires. He mentioned that the NFA is enhancing its Integrated Community Fire Wardens and Emergency Response Framework—a training program offered free to all communities. This program includes two weeks of intensive training covering firefighting skills, fire prevention, basic first aid, and emergency response within communities.
