Family Left Homeless After Devastating House Fire

A family in Koroqaqa, located along Baulevu Road near Nausori Town, has lost their home due to a fire that occurred on Wednesday morning. According to the National Fire Authority (NFA), the blaze began in the storage area, and despite the homeowner’s attempt to extinguish it with a garden hose, the family was forced to evacuate as the fire spread rapidly.

The NFA estimated the damage to the four-bedroom residence to be between $80,000 and $90,000. Firefighting teams from the Nausori and Nakasi fire stations responded to the incident around 6 am. At the time of the fire, the home was occupied by a 31-year-old taxi driver, his wife, two children, and his mother.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are currently underway. NFA CEO Puamau Sowane expressed concern over the increasing number of residential fires. He highlighted that the NFA is enhancing its Integrated Community Fire Wardens and Emergency Response Framework, which includes free training for communities. This two-week program focuses on fire prevention, basic first aid, and emergency response strategies.
