A family in Koroqaqa, located along Baulevu Road outside Nausori Town, has lost their home due to a fire that occurred on Wednesday morning. According to the National Fire Authority (NFA), the fire originated in the storage area of the house. The homeowner initially attempted to extinguish the blaze using a garden hose, but the flames spread rapidly, forcing the family to escape.
The NFA estimated the damage to the four-bedroom home to be between $80,000 and $90,000. Firefighters from the Nausori and Nakasi fire stations responded to the incident around 6 am. At the time of the fire, the property was occupied by a 31-year-old taxi driver, his wife, two children, and his mother.
NFA Chief Executive Officer Puamau Sowane expressed concern over the increasing number of home fires. He mentioned that the NFA is enhancing its Integrated Community Fire Wardens and Emergency Response Framework, which is a training program offered to communities at no cost. This program includes two weeks of intensive training focused on firefighting skills, fire prevention, basic first aid, and emergency response within the community.
Investigations into the fire are currently underway.
