Family Left Homeless After Devastating Fire Claims Home

A family in Koroqaqa, located along Baulevu Road near Nausori Town, has lost their home due to a fire that broke out on Wednesday morning. According to the National Fire Authority (NFA), the fire originated from a storage area. The homeowner attempted to extinguish the flames using a garden hose, but the fire spread rapidly, forcing the family to flee.

The estimated damage to the four-bedroom residence is between $80,000 and $90,000. Firefighters from the NFA’s Nausori and Nakasi stations responded to the incident around 6 AM. The affected family includes a 31-year-old taxi driver, his wife, their two children, and his mother, all of whom were present at the time of the fire.

Investigations are currently underway. NFA CEO Puamau Sowane voiced his concern regarding the increasing frequency of residential fires. He announced that the NFA is enhancing its Integrated Community Fire Wardens and Emergency Response Framework, a training program offered at no cost to communities. This initiative includes two weeks of intensive training focused on firefighting techniques, fire prevention, basic first aid, and community emergency response.
