Family in Nadi Seeks to Build Flood-Resistant Home After Recent Evacuation

Ratu Baleidreima, a 53-year-old resident of Nadi, is determined to create a more resilient home that can withstand future flooding. Recently, he and his family, including his wife and five children, were forced to evacuate from their house due to rising floodwaters. Currently, they are among those taking shelter at Andrews Primary School in Nadi.

In 2019, Baleidreima purchased land at Nawaijikuma Settlement in Nawaka, an area susceptible to flooding, and constructed a makeshift home for his family. The security guard from Lovoni, Ovalau, shared that flooding has repeatedly disrupted their lives, often necessitating evacuations to safer locations.

“My only wish is to build a high post-setting house for my family,” he expressed. However, with limited income, he is currently prioritizing his children’s education over immediate construction plans. His children range in age, with his oldest attending Nadi Special School, another preparing to start high school next year, and three others still in primary school.

Describing their recent experience, Mr. Baleidreima recounted a frightening incident on Christmas Day when floodwaters invaded their home just as they were about to enjoy their holiday lunch. After alerting the police, they packed essential items and were evacuated to safety.

As they await the waters to recede, Mr. Baleidreima looks forward to returning home to clean up and eventually move forward with his plans for a more permanent and secure residence.

This story highlights the resilience and hope of families facing environmental challenges. As they look towards the future, community support and improved infrastructure development can provide real solutions for those living in flood-prone areas. The determination of individuals like Mr. Baleidreima serves as an inspiration for collective efforts to adapt and thrive despite adversity.
