Sanjay Nand is grateful after his family narrowly escaped a fire that broke out in their rental home on Tiri Road in Nadawa, Nasinu, yesterday. Nand reported that the fire originated in the middle room, but he was relieved that his wife, mother-in-law, and niece suffered only minor burns. His wife was the only one who required hospital attention.
Nand was at work when he received the alarming news about the fire. Upon his arrival, he found the house still engulfed in flames while his family was outside. He noted that he pays $1000 in rent for the three-bedroom property but is currently unaware of the total damage caused by the fire. He expressed his gratitude to the firefighters who managed to contain the blaze, preventing it from spreading to nearby homes.
According to Nand, when his wife entered the bedroom, the mattress was already ablaze, but the cause of the fire remains unclear. He mentioned that the flames quickly spread to the roof. Nand also revealed that his family practices daily prayers at home, using a diya (lamp) for their rituals. However, he is uncertain whether the diya may have contributed to the fire, as he believes it would have fallen onto a tray if it had been the source.
The National Fire Authority (NFA) confirmed that they received a call regarding the fire, and a response team from Valelevu worked to extinguish the flames. The initial cause of the fire is under investigation. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro also confirmed the incident, stating that two women and a child had successfully evacuated. She noted that the cause of the fire remains unknown pending the fire report from the NFA.
