Sanjay Nand is expressing gratitude after his family narrowly escaped a fire that broke out in their rented home on Tiri Road in Nadawa, Nasinu. The fire, which started in the middle room of the house, left his wife, mother-in-law, and niece with only minor burns. Mr. Nand reported that his wife was the sole family member requiring treatment and was taken to the hospital.
He was at work when he received the alarming call about the blaze. Upon his arrival, he found his family safely outside as firefighters worked to control the flames. Mr. Nand, who pays $1,000 in rent for the three-bedroom house, is currently unaware of the extent of the damage caused by the fire.
He expressed appreciation for the firefighters who managed to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to nearby residences. According to Mr. Nand, his wife discovered the fire when she entered the bedroom, where the mattress was already aflame. The origins of the fire remain a mystery, as the flames quickly extended to the house’s roof.
The family regularly engages in daily prayers at home, utilizing a diya, or lamp, during their rituals. Mr. Nand speculated that if the diya had fallen, it would have landed on the tray, making it uncertain whether it was the cause of the fire.
The National Fire Authority confirmed receipt of the fire call and dispatched a team from Valelevu to manage the situation. Investigations into the initial cause of the fire are ongoing. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro substantiated the incident and noted that two women and a child were safely evacuated. She added that the cause of the fire remains unverified as authorities await the NFA’s fire report.
