Sanjay Nand is grateful his family escaped unharmed after their rented house on Tiri Road in Nadawa, Nasinu caught fire yesterday. Mr. Nand reported that the fire ignited in the middle room of the house, but fortunately, his wife, mother-in-law, and niece only sustained minor burns. His wife was the only family member requiring hospital treatment.

At the time of the incident, Mr. Nand was at work when he was informed about the fire. Upon arriving home, he found the house engulfed in flames but relieved to see his family safely outside. He noted that as a tenant paying $1,000 in rent for the three-bedroom house, he is unaware of the total damages caused by the fire.

Mr. Nand expressed his gratitude to the firefighters for their efforts in controlling the blaze and preventing it from spreading to nearby homes. He mentioned that when his wife went into the bedroom, the mattress was already aflame, but the cause of the fire remains unknown. The fire then spread to the roof of the house.

He also highlighted that his family prays together daily and uses a diya, a lamp traditionally lit during rituals. However, he is unsure if it could have caused the fire, as it would have fallen onto a tray.

The National Fire Authority (NFA) confirmed their teams responded to the incident and managed to contain the fire, but the initial cause is still under investigation. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro verified that two women and a child evacuated safely. She added that the cause of the fire is yet to be determined, pending the NFA’s report.
