A family in Vunivau, Labasa, tragically lost their home, valued at $200,000 and built over 45 years, in a fire that occurred last Friday night. Prasheel Naicker, who is 27 years old, reported that his father, grandmother, and uncle were present in the house at the time of the fire, which began while he was out visiting relatives in Labasa Town.
The fire reportedly originated from the family’s prayer room and quickly spread to the roof. It was two passersby who first noticed the flames and alerted the family. Despite Naicker’s multiple calls to the National Fire Authority (NFA) and his personal visit to the local fire station to urge a quicker response, the authorities arrived too late to salvage any belongings from their home. Naicker expressed deep disappointment over the NFA’s delayed response, believing that swifter action could have mitigated the loss of their possessions.
This incident marks the second significant house fire in the Northern Division within two weeks. The first fire occurred on New Year’s Day in Waiqele, Labasa, where the home was also entirely destroyed while the owners were away. That fire is estimated to have caused around $250,000 in damages and has raised serious concerns about fire safety in rural areas where resources may be limited.
Local authorities, including Acting Divisional Police Commander North, Superintendent Eroni Soqosoqo, confirmed that investigations into both incidents are ongoing. The repeated occurrences of home fires have prompted discussions about strengthening fire safety measures and improving emergency response protocols in rural communities.
Although these tragic events have left the affected families in a difficult position, there is hope that their experiences will lead to significant improvements in fire safety infrastructure. The resilience and support from the community highlight the crucial importance of being vigilant and proactive in fire prevention measures. As efforts continue to evaluate the challenges faced during emergencies, the commitment to ensuring a safer living environment is expected to grow.
In summary, while the losses the Naicker family and others have suffered are profound, the community’s outpouring of support and the commitment of local authorities provide a glimmer of hope for future improvements in fire safety and emergency preparedness.
