An Australian family is seeking accountability and safety improvements following a heartbreaking incident where a five-year-old girl tragically drowned at Biausevu Waterfall in Fiji. This incident has gained international attention, notably reported by various outlets including 7 News Australia.

On January 12, while on vacation with her family, Lilly Wal was swept away by strong currents at the popular site. The following day, the Fiji Police Force confirmed that her body was recovered from the Biausevu River, deepening the family’s sorrow.

In a heartfelt social media post, Lilly’s cousin, Chiara Subek, expressed outrage over what she described as a “complete failure in duty of care.” Subek criticized tour operators and local authorities for neglecting their safety responsibilities, stating that the family was not warned about potential dangers linked to rainfall in the area. She emphasized that there was no briefing on safety procedures, despite known risks during inclement weather.

The emotional aftermath of the tragedy has led Subek to call for accountability, highlighting that “no other family should have to experience this pain.” She also called for increased awareness and changes to safety protocols to prevent future tragedies. The local response has left the family feeling neglected, as they seek assurance that their concerns are being treated seriously.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is offering consular assistance to the grieving family and has extended condolences, although further comments have been refrained from due to privacy regulations.

As a popular tourist destination located about 90 minutes from Nadi, Biausevu Waterfall attracts many visitors. This tragic incident raises critical questions about safety measures in tourist attractions, particularly regarding adequate training and protocol communications to ensure the well-being of all visitors. The family’s efforts for change might serve as a catalyst for improved safety regulations, ultimately protecting future visitors from similar heartbreak.
