In 2023, reports indicate that there have been a total of 1,477 cases of child abuse, with a striking 73 percent of the perpetrators being known to the victims. Among these, 50 percent of the abusers are immediate family members. This information was revealed by Lynda Tabuya, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, based on data from the National Child Welfare Act Database.

The cases encompass various forms of abuse, including neglect, physical, and sexual abuse. Minister Tabuya emphasized the alarming trend of child abuse and neglect happening in what should be safe spaces for children, often involving close family members.

The statistics show a concerning increase in child abuse cases over the years, highlighting the urgent need for intervention and prevention initiatives. The Fijian government is committed to protecting children’s rights and is working collaboratively with key stakeholders in child protection to address welfare issues effectively.

Minister Tabuya also noted that the government recognizes important events such as the International Day for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, celebrated on November 19, and World Children’s Day on November 20. These occasions aim to celebrate children’s rights and advocate for preventive measures against child abuse and neglect. They also reflect on the progress made in protecting children and ensuring their rights are upheld.

This pressing issue calls for community awareness and collective action. While the statistics may paint a grim picture, the government’s dedication to addressing these challenges offers hope for improved child welfare as programs and educational campaigns are put into place to safeguard the future of children in Fiji.

By promoting open discussions and preventative measures, there may be potential for a positive change in the landscape of child protection, protecting future generations from harm and fostering a safer environment for all children.
