Assistant Minister for Education Iliesa Vanawalu has emphasized the essential role of families in instilling proper manners and behavior in children. He highlighted that education begins at home, stating, “Children don’t just appear from nowhere; they come from families.” According to Vanawalu, the responsibility for children’s behavior and development lies primarily with their families, rather than the Government or educational institutions.

He pointed out that while educators and religious leaders may contribute to a child’s upbringing, it is ultimately the parents who serve as the primary influence. “The foundation of a child’s education begins at home,” he asserted, suggesting that children who receive proper guidance from their families are better equipped to face life’s challenges.

This call for enhanced parental involvement aligns with ongoing discussions in Fiji regarding child welfare and education. Similar sentiments have been expressed by other leaders, including Education Minister Aseri Radrodro, who has urged parents to engage more actively in their children’s education to combat declining performance trends observed in recent years. Radrodro’s appeals echo the recognition of the growing challenges children face today, including distractions from technology and societal issues.

Moreover, Ratu Viliame Seruvakula, Chairman of the Great Council of Chiefs, has also underscored the importance of parents prioritizing their children’s needs over personal interests during recent public addresses.

Amidst the rising cases of child neglect reported by Minister for Women, Children, and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya, the emphasis on family dynamics highlights a hopeful shift towards greater collective responsibility. The call for parents to actively engage in their children’s lives fosters an environment conducive to nurturing, aiming to improve educational outcomes and societal well-being.

With the combined efforts of families, educators, and community members, there is an optimistic prospect for the future, as a united front can significantly influence the proper upbringing of children and prepare them for success in life.
