A 21-year-old woman from Labasa has been charged with providing false information to the police after reporting a fabricated story about being assaulted and robbed by two unknown men. This incident occurred last Saturday when she claimed that her money, gold watch, and mobile phone were stolen while she was walking to work near Labasa Hospital.

However, police investigations, which included reviewing CCTV footage, contradicted her story. The footage showed her getting into a taxi after arriving at the Labasa Bus Stand. The taxi driver corroborated that he dropped her off at her boyfriend’s house in Line Point, Batinikama, rather than the alleged crime scene.

Upon further questioning, the woman admitted that she had actually gone to her boyfriend’s house, where the assault took place. Police recovered the stolen items from her boyfriend’s home, leading to an investigation that categorized the incident as one of domestic violence. Consequently, she was charged under Section 201 of the Crimes Act 2009 for giving false information, while her boyfriend faces charges of Assault Causing Actual Bodily Harm (ACABH) under Section 275 of the same act.

Both individuals are in police custody and are scheduled to appear in the Labasa Magistrate Court. This case underlines the serious issues concerning domestic violence and the significance of accurate reporting. Authorities are committed to addressing such sensitive matters with care to protect victims and ensure justice.

As communities continue to grapple with domestic violence, this incident serves as a poignant reminder for individuals to seek assistance and support in times of need. It also highlights the necessity for authorities and the community to take domestic abuse seriously and foster an environment where victims feel safe to come forward.
