Fallen Tree Sparks Major Power Outage in Suva

A fallen tree on the 132kV Transmission Line connecting the Wailoa Power Station to the Cunningham Road Zone Substation in Suva caused significant power disruptions in the Central Division this afternoon.

Hasmukh Patel, the chief executive of Energy Fiji Limited, reported that a tree being cut in Waibau accidentally fell onto the 132,000-volt transmission line, disrupting the power supply from the Wailoa Hydro Electric Power Station to the substation in Suva.

“Our teams are currently en route to remove the fallen tree from the transmission line before we can re-energize it,” Patel stated.

He also noted that efforts are underway to restore power to affected areas through the Kinoya Power Station, but full restoration in the Central Division may take some time.

Patel urged the public to treat all power lines as live and to maintain a safe distance as circumstances may cause any power line to become electrified unexpectedly.

He apologized for the unplanned power disruption and any inconvenience it has caused, emphasizing that the situation is beyond their control and requesting the understanding and cooperation of their valued customers.
