Fallen Tree Causes Major Power Outage in Central Division

The Central Division faced a significant power outage yesterday due to a tree falling on Energy Fiji Ltd’s (EFL) 132,000-volt transmission line in Waibau. EFL’s chief executive officer, Hasmukh Patel, stated that the incident occurred around 2:28 PM.

Patel reported that a tree, which was being cut, accidentally struck the transmission line, interrupting the power supply from the Wailoa Hydro Electric Power Station to the Cunningham Road Zone Substation in Suva. Crews were dispatched to clear the fallen tree from the line before it could be re-energized.

He indicated that while efforts were underway to restore power to the affected areas via the Kinoya Power Station, a complete recovery for the Central Division would require some time. The public has been advised to avoid all power lines during this period.

EFL expressed its apologies for the unexpected power disruption and the inconvenience it caused, emphasizing that the situation was beyond their control and requesting understanding from their customers.
