HIV advocate Temo Sasau has voiced a critical message: prayer and herbal remedies do not cure HIV. Reflecting on his personal experience, Sasau shared that after his diagnosis, church leaders approached him with promises of healing through prayer, which ultimately did not materialize. He pointed out that this reliance on faith-based healing can be dangerous, as it may prevent individuals from seeking essential medical treatment.

Sasau emphasized that many people turn to alternative solutions, believing that spiritual healing alone can replace life-saving antiretroviral drugs. He warned that untreated HIV can severely compromise the immune system, leaving the body open to serious infections. Currently, Sasau is undergoing effective treatment, resulting in his classification as undetectable, meaning he cannot transmit the virus to others.

He urges community leaders, families, and churches to advocate for scientifically proven treatments instead of unverified cures. This sentiment aligns with previous discussions in Fiji about the risks associated with rejecting antiretroviral therapy (ART) in favor of untested herbal options. Healthcare professionals, like Dr. Rachel Devi and Renata Ram from UNAIDS, have similarly warned against the dangers of relying solely on alternative medicine, stressing the proven efficacy of ART in managing HIV.

The growing concern is palpable as more individuals diagnosed with HIV are increasingly opting for herbal treatments, driven partly by stigma and misinformation about the virus. It underscores the need for comprehensive health education and community support to encourage those affected to seek appropriate care.

Despite the challenges, there is a hopeful message: With proper treatment and community backing, individuals living with HIV can lead healthy, fulfilling lives. Initiatives focusing on awareness and the importance of medical treatment can help dispel myths surrounding the virus and improve overall health outcomes in Fiji.
