Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, has called on religious organizations in the country to assist the government in addressing drug-related issues. Speaking at the 50th anniversary celebration of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Fiji on Saturday, he expressed the government’s growing concern over the influx of hard drugs in the nation.

Prasad highlighted a troubling rise in drug cases among students and young people, stating, “This must stop immediately.” He emphasized that faith-based organizations could play a pivotal role in the struggle against drugs.

“I am a firm believer that faith-based organizations such as ISKCON can significantly contribute to our efforts against drugs,” he said. He urged for collaboration to tackle the social challenges that confront society, advocating for a commitment to the principles of humility, service, and devotion to collectively address the social ills affecting communities.

“We should work together in unity and service, seeking blessings as we build a nation characterized by peace and harmony,” he added.

Prasad acknowledged ISKCON Fiji’s promotion of values that align with the government’s vision for nation building through love, unity, and a focus on sustainability and environmental awareness. He praised ISKCON for advocating a lifestyle rooted in simplicity and fostering harmony with nature.

“ISKCON’s humanitarian initiatives exemplify society’s compassion and commitment to service,” he noted, commending the organization’s efforts during natural disasters and crises. He described their caregivers as embodying the highest spiritual principles of selflessness, kindness, and dedication to assisting others.

Additionally, he acknowledged ISKCON’s positive influence on the younger generation, noting that the organization imparts valuable life principles, moral discipline, and responsible citizenship. “ISKCON is cultivating future leaders who are grounded in spiritual values and dedicated to the greater good,” he said.

According to Prasad, the teachings of dharma and the sacredness of life offered by ISKCON are essential guidance for young people, steering them towards integrity, compassion, and effective leadership.
