The Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) initiated its 2025 calendar of events with a special highlight: the first-ever Commissioner’s Church Parade held on February 16 at the Korovou Chapel in Walubay. This significant event drew officers from both the National Headquarters and the Central Eastern Division, with concurrent parades taking place at correctional centers across Fiji’s Northern, Western, and Southern Divisions.
The spiritually enriching service was led by Senior Pastor Reverend Laisenia Kaiwai from the Nauluvatu Methodist Church. In his sermon, which was inspired by 2 Chronicles 16:1–10, he emphasized the significance of steadfast faith during turbulent times, paralleling the biblical narratives of divine deliverance, particularly the Israelites’ exodus from Egypt.
Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa expressed sincere gratitude to FCS personnel for their unwavering dedication and hard work. He highlighted the critical role that faith plays in both personal and professional spheres, declaring that attending church is fundamental to development in both areas. “It is essential to have faith as a guiding force in both your work and life,” he stated.
The parade was not solely a celebration of faith but reinforced the core values of the FCS—integrity, faith, and community service. Officers were urged to continue embodying these principles in their duty to serve the public and fulfill the mission of the FCS, promoting a positive and resilient environment within the correctional system.
Reflecting on previous initiatives, such as the introduction of a new Rehabilitation Framework aimed at empowering inmates through tailored rehabilitation programs, the FCS is firmly committed to fostering a professional and supportive corrections environment. This focus on rehabilitation and community engagement signifies a hopeful outlook for the future.
In summary, the Commissioner’s Church Parade not only marks a spiritual milestone for the FCS but also serves as an affirmation of their dedication to integrity and community service. As they move forward, the emphasis on faith and professional development offers a promising pathway towards enhancing the overall effectiveness and humanitarian aspect of the corrections system in Fiji.
