Factional Tensions Emerge Over Fiji’s Presidential Nomination

A divide within the People’s Alliance Party emerged during its general assembly in Lautoka yesterday, as members expressed concerns regarding the party’s position on the nomination of Fiji’s next President. Supporters at Hotel 2000 inquired whether a nominee had been chosen in light of the current President’s term nearing its conclusion.

Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has been serving as President since his appointment by the FijiFirst government on October 22, 2021, followed by his swearing-in a month later. According to the 2013 Constitution, Fiji’s President is appointed by Parliament for a term of three years, leading to speculation about potential successors.

Party leader and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated that no formal motion to nominate a candidate was presented during the assembly. He mentioned that after the 2022 elections, various factions had sought to influence both the President and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander, but both men stood firm against such pressures.

Rabuka confirmed discussions had taken place regarding the presidential nomination and that the current President was aware of these talks, particularly given the possibility of increased tensions due to social media and party divisions. He cautioned that selecting a new candidate would be inappropriate, emphasizing that no Fijian President has ever served only one term.

He remarked, “In deference to the previous government that appointed Tui Macuata, we should grant him another term. He has performed well, acted within the Constitution, and deserves our respect.”

Attendance at the meeting was limited, with only a few PA ministers present, including Rabuka, Manoa Kamikamica, Vatimi Rayalu, Sakiasi Tubuna, Esrom Immanuel, and Jese Saukuru.
