Faction Tensions Emerge in People’s Alliance Party Ahead of Presidential Nomination

A rift within the People’s Alliance Party surfaced during its general assembly in Lautoka, where members expressed concerns about the party’s position regarding the nomination process for Fiji’s next President. The inquiry arose among supporters at Hotel 2000, who wanted to know if a candidate had been proposed given that the current President’s term is nearing its end.

Ratu Wiliame Katonivere was appointed by the previous FijiFirst government on October 22, 2021, and his swearing-in took place a month later. According to the 2013 Constitution, the President of Fiji is chosen by Parliament for a term of three years, leading to speculation about his potential successor.

Party leader and Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka clarified that no official motion has been put forward during the assembly to propose a presidential candidate. He noted that after the 2022 elections, various factions sought to influence both the President and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) Commander. However, both individuals stood firm against such pressures.

Rabuka mentioned that discussions had taken place regarding potential nominees for the presidency and stated that the current President has been made aware of these talks, particularly as social media and internal divisions could exacerbate the situation. He cautioned that it would be inappropriate to nominate another candidate, as it is unprecedented for a Fijian President to serve only one term.

“In recognition of the previous government that appointed Tui Macuata, we should offer him another term,” Rabuka asserted. “He has performed well, acted within the Constitution, and deserves our respect.”

During the meeting, only a few ministers from the People’s Alliance were in attendance: Rabuka, Manoa Kamikamica, Vatimi Rayalu, Sakiasi Tubuna, Esrom Immanuel, and Jese Saukuru.
