Exposing the Dark Link Between Sex Work and Drug Trafficking

Many young sex workers are often compelled to sell drugs, according to Fiji Council of Social Services executive director Vani Catanasiga.

Ms. Catanasiga highlighted that these sex workers are influenced by more experienced individuals and are pushed into drug dealing when they can no longer attract customers.

“Drug trafficking and sex work often operate hand in hand,” she stated.

“It creates an environment where young individuals are lured and then sometimes forced into a life of exploitation.”

Ms. Catanasiga noted that for many sex workers, it is a desperate attempt to earn money.

“If you listen to the stories of sex workers, you will find out there are some people depending on them,” she said.

“Relying on them to fund their education and support elderly parents and siblings.”

Ms. Catanasiga mentioned that many such stories have emerged from Ovalau.
