Police have initiated a nationwide operation aimed at dismantling a suspected explosive smuggling network. This effort, termed Operation Expo, involved police teams conducting raids on three homes in Lami, as reported in a May 8, 1997 article from The Fiji Times.
To bolster security, roadblocks were established in key areas including Sawani, Suva, and Lami, with more checkpoints anticipated throughout the country. Police Commissioner Isikia Savua confirmed that thorough searches of homes belonging to suspected individuals were underway as part of the initiative.
Charles Barclay, the general manager of Emperor Gold Mine—currently known as Vatukoula Gold Mine—revealed that several miners were recently dismissed following their involvement in smuggling electrical generators out of the mine. To prevent future incidents of theft, enhanced security protocols have been implemented, alongside the introduction of a reward system that compensates individuals who provide actionable information regarding the illegal transport of explosives.
Barclay emphasized that any information leading to the recovery of stolen explosives would be rewarded once verified. He had previously called upon the public for assistance in identifying those involved in illicit dealings with explosives.
Continuing the crackdown, Divisional Police Commissioner for the Eastern Division, Indar Prasad, noted that all suspicious houses and vehicles would be searched. Meanwhile, Savua mentioned ongoing discussions with the Department of Mineral Resources to ascertain whether explosives discovered in a raid on a residence in Toorak were linked to the Vatukoula mine or if they were smuggled into the country.
The investigation continues, with plans for police to confer with gold mine staff and Customs officials, contingent upon the findings regarding the origin of the explosives.
Despite receiving a tip-off leading to the raids in Lami, preliminary police reports indicated that no explosives were uncovered. Commissioner Savua once again appealed to the public for assistance to ensure the success of Operation Expo, urging citizens to reach out to the Crime Stoppers line with any tips about locations potentially harboring explosives.
In the face of these challenges, the police force emphasizes community cooperation and vigilance as crucial to combating illegal activities, underscoring the belief that together, a safer environment can be achieved.
This article not only highlights the proactive steps taken by law enforcement but also demonstrates the importance of public involvement in ensuring community safety, fostering a sense of collective responsibility in addressing crime.
