Fisheries and Forests Minister Alitia Bainivalu recently explored two potential sites for aquaculture ponds in the Kadavu region. The locations are situated in the villages of Tabuya and Solovola within the Nabukelevu District.

During her visit, Minister Bainivalu also had the opportunity to observe a seaweed farm in Cevai, which is operated by local entrepreneur Maika Vunituraga. This tour of Kadavu commenced last week and involved meetings with government officials at the Vunisea Government Station. The minister’s official visit concluded with a stop at the Kavala Fisheries Station.

This initiative highlights the government’s commitment to developing sustainable aquaculture practices that could bolster local economies and enhance food security in the region. The potential for aquaculture to provide new income sources for communities while promoting the responsible use of marine resources is particularly promising.

Overall, this visit underscores the importance of collaboration between government and local stakeholders in fostering sustainable practices that can benefit both the environment and the economy.
