A newly arrived expatriate recounted his harrowing experience of being robbed in Suva yesterday afternoon. The incident occurred around 12:30 PM while he was waiting for a taxi on Rukua Road near a T-junction close to a church operated by Koreans. Suddenly, three local men approached him and snatched his crossbody bag, which contained over $2,000 in cash.
During the altercation, the man fell to the ground, sustaining injuries to his right knee and finger. The suspects fled toward a nearby empty lot. As he attempted to chase them down, one of the assailants hurled stones at him, forcing him to retreat.
Fortunately, a passerby came to his aid by retrieving his hat and sunglasses, and a nearby woman, hearing his shouts for help, called a taxi and accompanied him to the police station. She provided a statement detailing the incident.
At the police station, officers took a formal report and later returned with him to the scene to gather information from local residents. They collected statements from two witnesses who observed the suspects making their escape. The man was subsequently taken to a government hospital for treatment.
The police have classified the case as robbery and provided him with a case receipt, assuring him that they would update him about any progress. The expatriate expressed his gratitude for the professionalism displayed by the police and the kindness of the individuals who helped him. He also urged others in Fiji to remain vigilant and prioritize their personal safety, highlighting the importance of community support in such troubling times.
