Demi Hayes is poised to make her long-awaited comeback from injury as four newcomers are set to make their Australian Sevens debuts during the opening round of the 2024/2025 HSBC Sevens World Series in Dubai, commencing on November 30.

Australian coaches Tim Walsh and Liam Barry have announced their squads for this season’s inaugural tournament, marking a fresh chapter for both teams following the recent Paris Olympics. Tim Walsh continues to lead the women’s team, while Liam Barry steps in as the head coach of the men’s team after John Manenti’s departure.

Hayes, who has been sidelined for nearly a year due to an ACL injury sustained in Cape Town, earned a spot in Walsh’s squad. Adding to the excitement, Kahli Henwood will officially debut in the Sevens series after a late qualification for the Olympic team in July. Kiiahla Duff has also been included as a replacement for the injured Bienne Terita, who will not participate in this tournament.

As the reigning HSBC Sevens World Series champions, Australia’s women’s team boasts a blend of experienced players and promising young talent. Charlotte Caslick and the Levi sisters, Maddison and Teagan, both are returning from impressive seasons. Meanwhile, several injured players, including Madison Ashby and Alysia Lefau-Fakaosilea, are making strides in their recovery.

The retirements of veterans Sharni Smale and Dominique Du Toit in August opened opportunities for newcomers like Henwood, Duff, and Amahli Hala to join the team full-time.

Coach Tim Walsh expressed optimism about the team’s preparation, noting, “We have enjoyed the mental and technical challenges and are determined to start the World Series where we finished last season as Champions.” He highlighted the debutants’ readiness and dedication over the years to earn their positions on the team.

On the men’s side, new head coach Liam Barry has introduced Aden Ekanayake and Sid Harvey as debutants, looking to energize an already competitive squad after a record-breaking Olympic performance. Barry’s leadership comes as the team undergoes a generational shift following the retirements of notable figures like captain Nick Malouf and former Wallabies captain Michael Hooper.

With a mix of seasoned players and rising stars, the men’s squad is ready to tackle the upcoming challenges, continuing to build on the foundation laid in recent games.

The Australian women will launch their Dubai campaign against China, while the men’s team will face South Africa in their opening match. Every match during the HSBC SVNS series will be broadcast live and ad-free on Stan Sport, allowing fans to stay connected with the action.

As the teams prepare for this exciting season, it’s a moment of renewal and hope for both squads as they aim to showcase their talent on the world stage, promising an exhilarating start to the tournament.
