Jasper Williams Primary School made their debut in the Lautoka Primary Schools Rugby Festival yesterday. Thirteen-year-old Mereani Botitu shared that the team was thrilled and overwhelmed when they learned about their participation in the two-day festival.
“We have always been part of the GIR program but never competed. This year, we were overjoyed to hear that we would participate in this festival,” Botitu said. “All the girls prepared well, and we looked forward to this day, praying to God for good weather.”
When asked about their focus in rugby, Botitu mentioned that their primary goal is to develop their talents and secure opportunities to play overseas. “Our goal is to become good rugby players, don the Fiji jersey, and play abroad,” she concluded with her teammates.
The festival marks a significant milestone for Jasper Williams Primary School, providing the girls with a platform to showcase their skills and passion for the sport. Their participation is a testament to their dedication and hard work, as well as a sign of growing opportunities for young female athletes in Fiji.
LPSRA president Rusiate Cinavilakeba highlighted the importance of such events in promoting rugby at the grassroots level. “It’s encouraging to see schools like Jasper Williams Primary participating in the festival. This event is not just about competition, but about development, instilling values, and providing opportunities for young talents to grow,” Cinavilakeba said.
