The RC Manubhai 7’/14” Nataleira Sevens tournament is set to take place from December 12-14 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, and it has introduced exciting new regulations that aim to enhance the experience for participants. Tournament director Solo Finau announced the inclusion of a bonus points system designed to benefit all teams competing in this event.

Organizers are looking to attract around 80 teams across four tiers of competition. Tier One will host champion teams, Tier Two will include regular teams, Tier Three is designated for senior women’s teams, and Tier Four will feature Under-19 players.

Finau emphasized the tournament’s innovative approach, aimed at rekindling interest in sevens rugby within the country. He noted that these changes are intended not only to offer financial benefits to teams but also to foster player development. “We are changing the competition format so that our local players can handle pressure situations,” he said. He also encouraged teams to embrace natural scoring methods, recalling how drop goals have been pivotal in previous World Cups.

In addition to the bonus points system, teams are in for immediate rewards after matches. Players who score a coast-to-coast try—starting from their own in-goal space—will earn $100, and team captains will receive a similar amount for team tries. Additional cash rewards will be granted for achievements such as the most converted tries, drop goals, and penalty goals throughout the tournament.

Moreover, there will be a special prize of $100 for the fastest team try that matches or surpasses Alosio Naduva’s record of 6.78 seconds or completes the try within 7 seconds, without stoppages.

The Fiji Rugby Union has sanctioned this tournament, which will officially launch on December 6.

This tournament not only promises competitive excitement but also presents a unique opportunity for local players to showcase their talent and creativity on the field. As rugby continues to evolve, such innovations could inspire greater participation and engagement in the sport.
