A former police officer has been sentenced to four years and 11 months in prison for the manslaughter of an intoxicated man due to an altercation that escalated tragically. Fifita Toma Tawake, 28, was sentenced by Justice Thushara Rajasinghe following his guilty plea to the charge. The incident occurred on January 13, when Tawake, while under the influence of alcohol, struck the victim after the man allegedly tapped their car as Tawake’s vehicle ran a red light in Suva.
The court heard that after the assault, Tawake showed a lack of compassion by leaving the man, who was left unconscious, in a vulnerable state on the pavement during heavy rain. Justice Rajasinghe remarked on the disrespect shown toward the victim, noting the severity of leaving him in such conditions.
Despite being a first-time offender, Tawake’s actions were deemed grave, though he expressed remorse and entered his guilty plea on the opening day of the trial. The sentence handed down includes a non-parole period of two years and 11 months.
This case underscores the implications of reckless behavior, particularly among those in positions of authority. It serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and respect for all individuals, regardless of their state. With a sentence now in place, it is hoped that the tragedy can inspire discussions around responsible conduct and the consequences of violence, fostering a culture of accountability and care in communities.
The incident may also lead to greater awareness about the challenges faced by individuals battling addiction, encouraging efforts for compassion and rehabilitation in such sensitive situations.
