A former police officer has been sentenced to four years and 11 months in prison for the manslaughter of an intoxicated man. Fifita Toma Tawake, 28, received this sentence from Justice Thushara Rajasinghe following his guilty plea for one count of manslaughter. The incident occurred on January 13, when Tawake, while under the influence of alcohol, struck a man who had tapped on the back of their car while it was slowly moving through a red light in Central Street, Suva.

During the court proceedings, it was noted that Tawake showed a lack of respect for the victim, who was left unconscious on the road. Justice Rajasinghe emphasized Tawake’s disrespectful actions in dragging the victim to the corner of the Westpac head office and abandoning him in the rain.

The court took into account that Tawake was a first-time offender, expressing remorse and pleading guilty on the first day of his trial. As part of his sentencing, he was given a non-parole period of two years and 11 months.

This case serves as a strong reminder of the consequences of violence and the importance of accountability, particularly for those who hold positions of trust and authority. It underscores the need for continuous education and awareness about responsible behavior, especially when consuming alcohol.
