Former Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry has raised alarms regarding a potential constitutional crisis in Fiji, claiming that the current government is neglecting fundamental issues that undermine public trust in its leadership. In a critical letter addressed to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, Chaudhry expressed his belief that the nation has arrived at a pivotal juncture due to the government’s incapacity or unwillingness to tackle deep-seated corruption within state institutions.

Chaudhry accused the government of experiencing a state of paralysis, asserting that key governmental bodies are failing to operate in the nation’s best interest. He has called for immediate action, emphasizing the necessity to fully implement the recommendations laid out by the Commission of Inquiry, which he considers the only viable path forward.

He cautioned, “If the ‘crocodiles’ are not dealt with according to law, you could end up being their fodder,” indicating a profound concern for the consequences of inaction. As the leader of the Fiji Labour Party, Chaudhry voiced his party’s commitment to ensuring a secure and prosperous future for Fiji, urging the need for honest and dedicated leadership to navigate the country through its current challenges.

Chaudhry concluded his letter with a hopeful note, expressing his desire for the government to take the right steps for the benefit of the nation, highlighting an underlying sense of optimism that, with the right leadership and decisive action, Fiji can overcome its significant hurdles.
