A former police officer, Fifita Toma Tawake, has been sentenced to four years and 11 months in prison after pleading guilty to the manslaughter of an intoxicated man. The sentencing took place in the Suva High Court before Justice Thushara Rajasinghe. The incident occurred on January 13 of this year when Tawake, who was under the influence of alcohol, violently struck the victim after a minor encounter involving their vehicle at a red light.
The court highlighted Tawake’s lack of concern for the victim, who was left unconscious and disregarded in the street, exacerbated by the pouring rain. While acknowledging the crime’s severity, Justice Rajasinghe noted that Tawake expressed remorse and was a first-time offender, which influenced the court’s decision on the sentence.
Tawake will serve a non-parole period of two years and 11 months as part of his sentence.
This case serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with public service roles and the importance of accountability. It is hoped that Tawake’s remorse signals a path towards personal reflection and growth, contributing to positive change upon his eventual release. Additionally, it opens up a conversation about responsible behavior and the impact of alcohol consumption on decision-making.
