The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) is set to implement eviction orders this week, a move made necessary by a significant number of tenants failing to pay their rent obligations. TLTB’s chief executive, Solomone Nata, emphasized that this decision is part of their commitment to ensuring that iTaukei landowners receive the lease payments that are rightfully theirs.

Nata stated, “We urge all leaseholders with overdue rent payments to urgently clear their arrears or risk facing the consequences.” He highlighted that despite trying various methods to encourage compliance such as reminders, notices, and payment arrangements, continued non-payment by certain tenants has compelled the Board to take this step in the interest of justice for the landowners.

As of now, TLTB has reported that arrears owed by tenants have reached alarming levels, with a total of $28.1 million outstanding from approximately 25,444 tenants who are in breach of their lease agreements. Faced with this challenge, TLTB is also stressing the importance of fairness and transparency in lease management.

The board aims to execute these eviction orders following the law and due process, and further action may be taken if arrears continue within other leases. Nata encouraged tenants facing difficulties to communicate with their nearest TLTB office for assistance in settling their lease arrears to avoid further legal action.

The situation is not just about enforcement; it’s about the broader impacts on community well-being. Landowners depend on the income from these leases for their livelihoods and overall development. Therefore, while some tenants may face eviction, there is hope that through proactive steps and open dialogue, a path can be found that fosters better compliance and supports the stability of the entire community.

Tenants are reminded that their leases are legally binding, and their adherence is crucial for maintaining good standing with TLTB. This serves as a critical reminder of the shared responsibility among tenants and landowners for the sustainability and economic health of the community.
