The Fiji Muslim League (FML) has the legal right to develop its land in Nabua, Suva, as affirmed by Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa during a recent meeting with over 400 families facing eviction from the Nabua Muslim League settlement. Nalumisa emphasized the complexities surrounding land ownership and the consequent evictions, acknowledging the challenges residents face in potentially having to relocate.

He highlighted that the Coalition Government is actively engaged in discussions with the Fiji Muslim League regarding the eviction process, demonstrating a commitment to dialogue and consultation. Nalumisa pointed out that these discussions are aimed at finding solutions that consider both the rights of the landowners and the needs of the residents who have lived there for many years.

Additionally, the Minister indicated that the government will collaborate with the Fiji Muslim League to facilitate the relocation of the residents, which will include gathering comprehensive data about the current inhabitants, including details about household incomes. This information is crucial for devising appropriate relocation plans.

The background of this issue dates back to 2015, during which various consultations involving residents of the settlement took place. The Fiji Muslim League’s desire to initiate its development projects has prompted the current situation, with a clear understanding that plans must be executed for progress.

In taking these steps, there is hope that both the Fiji Muslim League and the affected families can arrive at a collaborative solution that respects property rights while providing support for those who will need to move. The government’s intention to facilitate these discussions is a positive sign that all parties are open to finding a workable resolution.

This situation reflects the larger context of land rights and the intricate balance between development and community stability, and it sets a precedent for how similar issues might be approached in the future. While there are challenges ahead, the ongoing dialogue offers a chance for constructive outcomes for both the residents and the property owners.
