Residents of Jittu Estate in Samabula are experiencing significant distress following a forced evacuation ordered by the Public Rental Board (PRB) and police on Saturday. Many families, who have lived in the settlement for years, reported feeling blindsided by the lack of prior consultation from the authorities regarding their relocation to new housing at the Lagilagi development.
As the eviction unfolded, countless residents congregated outside their new homes, hoping to receive guidance from the PRB. However, their anticipation quickly turned to disappointment as officials failed to deliver clear answers about the next steps. Semisi Kaqalo, a long-time resident of over 20 years, openly criticized the PRB for not engaging the community in meaningful dialogue. He highlighted the struggles faced by families who rely on irregular income, emphasizing that the sudden move has exacerbated their challenges.
Mr. Kaqalo stated, “We were not properly consulted, neither were we informed about the procedures to follow to move into the new flats.” The situation became further complicated when residents alleged that police officers responded harshly to inquiries regarding the eviction process.
In response to the outcry, Timoci Naleba, the PRB general manager, assured the community that they would eventually be accommodated, explaining that currently, only 36 new flats are available for those displaced. He noted that tenants will need to pay rent but indicated there are options for those facing financial difficulties, such as seeking financial support from family members.
The ongoing challenges faced by the residents of Jittu Estate echo broader issues surrounding housing rights in Fiji, particularly in relation to the Lagilagi Housing Project. The project has been marred by past delays and a lack of transparency, as indicated in previous reports regarding fund mismanagement and the prioritization of families for housing. As families await relocation and clarity on housing procedures, it remains essential for the authorities to prioritize transparency and effective communication with affected communities.
While the immediate situation appears dire, the involvement of the PRB and ongoing dialogue surrounding housing initiatives may signal a path toward improved living conditions for families in need. The hope is that through collaborative efforts and renewed commitments, the goal of providing stable housing for communities like Jittu Estate can still be realized.
