Approximately 300 families at the Muslim League Squatter Settlement in Nabua are facing eviction following the delivery of eviction notices earlier this month. Asha Bibi, a longtime resident who has lived in the area for over three decades, revealed that the notifications demand residents vacate by the end of December.

Bibi expressed disappointment with the short notice provided and emphasized the lack of dialogue or consultation, stating, “This is definitely a bleak Christmas for the residents as we would be worrying about where to move.” The situation is pressing, with an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 people living within the settlement divided into five zones. Bibi, who operates a small canteen from her home to support her family, voiced her frustrations over inadequate communication from the authorities, questioning where they are expected to relocate.

Another resident, Ainal Nisha, who has lived in the settlement for more than 55 years, echoed the sentiments of despair but emphasized holding onto hope. She appealed to the government for assistance for the families facing eviction, highlighting the absence of support and reassurance regarding alternative housing options.

In response to the growing concern, Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Local Government and Housing, stated that his office is in discussions with the Fiji Muslim League to find alternative solutions. He assured residents that they would engage in proper dialogue once a relocation site is confirmed.

This situation highlights the need for timely communication and support from authorities to ensure that families affected by such evictions are not left in a state of uncertainty. It is hopeful to note that government officials are willing to engage and explore solutions, suggesting a potential path to a resolution for the families involved. With effective collaboration between the government and community leaders, there could be a chance for a more secure and optimistic future for these residents.
