Around 300 families living in the Muslim League Squatter Settlement in Nabua are facing potential eviction after receiving notices this month from the Fiji Muslim League. Long-term resident Asha Bibi, who has been part of the community for over 30 years, expressed her concerns regarding the short timeframe given to vacate the premises by December 31 of this year, describing the urgent notice as troubling.
Bibi mentioned that there has been a lack of communication or consultation from the authorities, which has left residents anxious about their future. She operates a small canteen that has supported her family for years and now feels uncertain about where they will go. Fellow resident Ainal Nisha, who has lived there for 55 years, echoed similar sentiments of despair but remains hopeful that help will come.
The local government, represented by the Minister for Local Government and Housing, Maciu Nalumisa, is currently in discussions with the Fiji Muslim League to explore alternative solutions. Nalumisa reassured residents that once a relocation site is identified, there will be proper communication and dialogue with those affected.
In these challenging times, it is encouraging to see government officials taking steps to address the residents’ plight. The hope for support and better conditions can pave the way for a more positive outcome for these families.
As the situation develops, it will be crucial for open lines of communication between the authorities and the community to ensure a fair resolution that considers the well-being of all residents.
