More than 60 households at the Kilikali settlement in Nasinu are facing relocation after receiving an eviction notice last month issued by Sherani and Co. on behalf of the RB Patel Group Ltd. The company plans to develop the land for commercial purposes, leading to uncertainty for the residents, some of whom have lived there for decades.

Housing Minister Maciu Nalumisa confirmed that the Ministry of Housing is undertaking a socio-economic survey to better understand the needs of the affected residents before the relocation process begins. He emphasized the ministry’s intent to ensure that the relocation plans are compassionate and cater to the actual needs of the families involved.

Mr. Nalumisa acknowledged the distress caused by the situation, particularly for families accustomed to their living conditions. He indicated that officials have met with representatives from RB Patel Group to request additional time for residents to prepare and explore alternative solutions. So far, initial survey findings reveal that some families are considering returning to their ancestral homes, while others are looking to collaborate with iTaukei landowners for relocation options. However, a significant challenge persists due to financial constraints that many families face in relocating to safer and more secure housing.

Out of 69 households within the settlement, the ministry has thus far surveyed 61. Moving forward, minister Nalumisa stated that they are reviewing these survey results and will present them to the landowners, while also requesting an extension to the eviction timeline. “This process may take time, but we are committed to ensuring the relocation plan is successful and beneficial for all involved,” he asserted.

This situation mirrors past challenges faced by other communities in Fiji, such as the residents of Nabua who experienced similar abrupt eviction notices. However, the proactive approach taken by the ministry and their willingness to engage with the affected community is a hopeful sign. It suggests potential for beneficial outcomes that prioritize the welfare of those impacted.

As the process unfolds, ongoing communication between the ministry and residents remains critical in navigating this challenging transition, paving the way for a supportive and constructive resolution for these vulnerable families.
