Eviction Dispute: Who Has the Right in Nabua?

Spread the love

The Fiji Muslim League (FML) is asserting its rights to develop its land in Nabua, Suva, amidst concerns from over 400 families facing potential eviction. This was addressed by Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, during a meeting with the affected residents. He emphasized that land ownership inherently grants the right to development, acknowledging the challenges residents would encounter if they are required to relocate after living in the area for several years.

Nalumisa outlined that the Coalition Government is engaged in discussions with the Fiji Muslim League to find viable solutions for the residents affected by eviction measures. He highlighted the importance of consultation and dialogue in the government’s approach, noting that conversations had been ongoing regarding this issue since 2015.

Moving forward, the government will collaborate with the Fiji Muslim League to assist in relocating the residents. Nalumisa requested time from the league to conduct surveys that would help identify the demographics and incomes of the households currently residing in the settlement. This data is crucial for developing effective relocation plans. The Fiji Muslim League is set to hold a meeting this Sunday to further address the situation.

This situation underscores the delicate balance between land rights and community needs, with efforts being made to ensure that any developments consider the livelihoods of existing residents. There is hope that through consultations, a compassionate resolution can be reached that respects both the development goals of the Fiji Muslim League and the needs of the families currently residing on the land.
