Eviction Controversy: Mother Fights to Keep Family Home

Authorities are currently looking into a reported forced eviction that took place at Lovu Seaside in Lautoka. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa has confirmed that they received a complaint from a tenant, Sofia Farzana, who alleged that her landlord pressured her to leave her home.

Farzana, a mother of two, posted a video on social media that depicted what appeared to be landowners removing fencing and plants from her property while demanding her eviction. In the video, a man accused her of selling the land without the owner’s consent and sought proof of a lease under her name. Farzana countered that her grandmother purchased the land in 1998 and transferred the title to her before her recent death.

“I was born here. I was raised by my grandmother. She bought this land and built this house, and she transferred it to my name,” Farzana stated. She also claimed that the landowners are asking for $15,000 to resell the land to her family. “They are telling us that if we want to stay, we must buy the land again with a new title. My husband is a struggling chef. This is an embarrassing and humiliating situation for me and my two little children,” she said.

SSP Vaisewa assured the public that investigations are ongoing into this troubling matter.

This situation underscores the broader issue of land ownership and tenant rights that many families face. It’s a reminder of the importance of legal protections for tenants and the need for fair processes when disputes arise. The hope is that through investigation, a resolution can be reached that respects the rights of all parties involved, potentially paving the way for better legal clarity in similar future cases.
