Evacuees Face Tough Decision: Return Home or Stay Another Day?

Spread the love

Evacuees from Andrews Primary School in Nadi are set to return to their homes after being sheltered for three days due to severe flooding in the area. While 190 evacuees have been instructed to leave, five families have requested an extension of their stay because water levels near their residences have not subsided sufficiently.

The majority of those affected are families from low-lying areas such as Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlement in Nawaka. On the day of the planned evacuation, Nadi District Officer Alifereti Abenisiga urged evacuees to clear the classrooms by 3 PM. Although evacuee Veveni Waqamasinika mentioned the concerns of the five families regarding the potential for further rainfall, the directive was for all to return home.

Families expressed gratitude for the support received during their time at the evacuation center, highlighting the assistance of the Muslim community and the Hare Krishna religious group. Other organizations, including the People’s Alliance party in Nadi, Frenzco Beverage Limited, and various non-governmental groups, also provided much-needed support to those affected by the floods.

This situation underscores the resilience and unity of the local community as they come together during challenging times. As evacuees return home, there is hope that the water levels will continue to recede, allowing families to begin the process of recovery and rebuilding.

It’s a reminder of the strength found in community support, especially during emergencies, and highlights the generosity of local organizations stepping up to help those in need.
