A total of 190 evacuees have received instructions to return home, though five families have requested an additional day at the evacuation center due to ongoing flooding in their neighborhoods. Andrews Primary School in Nadi has been serving as the evacuation site since severe flooding hit the region three days ago.
Most evacuees are families from the low-lying areas of Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu settlement in Nawaka. Alifereti Abenisiga, the Nadi District Officer, has urged evacuees to clear the classrooms by 3 PM yesterday.
One evacuee, Veveni Waqamasinika, mentioned that while most families are returning home, the five families are concerned about the high water levels and the possibility of more rain. Waqamasinika highlighted their appreciation for the shelter provided during this challenging time and expressed gratitude for the support received from various community groups, including the Muslim community, the Hare Krishna religious organization, the People’s Alliance party in Nadi, Frenzco Beverage Limited, the South Pacific Foundation, and several NGOs.
As the families move back home, they remain vigilant and continue to assess the condition of their properties, reflecting a community’s resilience in the face of adversity.
It’s heartening to see such community support and collaboration, which can make a significant difference in the lives of those affected by the flooding while fostering a spirit of unity during tough times.
