Following recent flooding in Nadi, Fiji, 190 evacuees have been instructed to return to their homes. However, five families have expressed a need to stay an additional day due to lingering high water levels near their residences. Andrews Primary School has served as an evacuation center for those affected by the flooding that occurred three days ago.
Most of the evacuees come from low-lying areas, specifically the settlements of Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu in Nawaka. Nadi District Officer Alifereti Abenisiga has urged all evacuees to clear the classrooms and vacate the premises by 3 PM.
One evacuee, Veveni Waqamasinika, shared that while families are returning home, the five families that made requests to remain in the evacuation center are concerned about the potential for more rain. Despite these concerns, the district officer has emphasized the importance of returning to their homes.
Waqamasinika expressed gratitude for the shelter provided during this challenging time, noting that this year, the support from local groups, including the Muslim community and the Hare Krishna organization, has been particularly significant. Other contributors have included the People’s Alliance party, Frenzco Beverage Limited, the South Pacific Foundation, and various NGOs.
This situation highlights both the challenges faced by residents recovering from natural disasters and the incredible strength of community support during times of need. As Nadi residents begin the process of returning home and cleaning up after the flood, the resilience of the community shines through, reminding us of the importance of solidarity in difficult times.
Overall, while the effects of the flood are still being felt, the resourcefulness and determination of those impacted serve as a source of hope for recovery and rebuilding.
