Evacuation efforts in Nadi are transitioning as 190 individuals are being encouraged to return home following recent flooding. However, five families from the low-lying areas of Nawaijikuma and Nawakalevu have requested an extension in their stay at Andrews Primary School, citing concerns over high water levels near their homes.

Over the past three days, the school has served as an evacuation center for those affected by the adverse weather conditions. Nadi District Officer, Alifereti Abenisiga, has instructed evacuees to clear the classrooms by 3 PM yesterday. Despite the urgency, evacuee Veveni Waqamasinika conveyed that the families remaining in the center are apprehensive about potential further rain and have thus asked for an additional day.

“We have been checking on our houses and doing some clean-up as well,” Waqamasinika stated, expressing gratitude for the support received during this difficult time. The local community has shown remarkable solidarity, with assistance from the Muslim community, the Hare Krishna group, the People’s Alliance party in Nadi, and other organizations such as Frenzco Beverage Limited and the South Pacific Foundation.

This situation underscores the resilience of the community, as they come together in times of need to support one another. Local organizations and residents are actively working to ensure that those affected by the flooding receive the necessary resources and emotional support to recover and rebuild.

In summary, while the majority of evacuees are returning home post-flooding, the plight of those who remain reflects the ongoing challenges faced by communities in the wake of natural disasters. The support and collaboration among various groups highlight a beacon of hope, showcasing the strength of unity in overcoming adversity.
